Answers to Your Biggest Questions About HBAC Programs

HBAC serves Texas students ages six through twenty-two whose emotional, behavioral, or psychiatric needs cannot be met in a traditional campus, yet who do not require inpatient hospitalization. Referrals typically come from district ARD committees after other placements have been exhausted.

Students learn in small, highly structured classrooms averaging one teacher and one behavior specialist for every four learners. This low ratio allows constant supervision, personalized instruction, rapid de-escalation, and the ability to adjust lessons to each child’s daily regulation level.

HBAC follows a TEA-approved K-12 curriculum aligned with each student’s IEP. Certified special educators teach core academics while therapists embed social-emotional lessons. Instruction blends direct teaching, adaptive technology, and hands-on projects to promote mastery at an individualized pace for all.

Yes. Every enrollee receives weekly individual counseling, group therapy, and daily behavioral coaching from licensed professionals. Occupational, speech, and music therapy are added as required by the IEP. Therapeutic interventions are integrated into academics to build coping, communication, and self-regulation skills.

HBAC collaborates with each contracting district to arrange safe, consistent transportation. Most students ride district-operated, climate-controlled buses staffed by a monitor trained in de-escalation. Some families choose to drive; mileage reimbursement may be available under the child’s Individualized Education Plan.

The therapeutic school day runs from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. A structured schedule balances academic blocks with counseling sessions, sensory breaks, and social skills groups, reducing fatigue and providing predictable routines that support emotional regulation and learning daily.

Because students remain enrolled in their home ISD, HBAC does not grant diplomas directly. We provide credits, state assessment preparation, and transition planning; transcripts are sent to the district, which ultimately confers the high school diploma upon graduation requirements being met.

After the ARD committee recommends HBAC, campus records are forwarded for review within two business days. An intake meeting is scheduled, and most students can begin services within one to two weeks, depending on transportation setup and any required safety planning.

Absolutely. Parents and guardians participate in quarterly IEP reviews, monthly family counseling, and regular communication via phone, email, or the secure parent portal. Their insights help our team fine-tune strategies and ensure skills practiced on campus transfer smoothly home too.

HBAC contracts primarily with public ISDs, but limited private-pay seats may be available when clinically appropriate. Families should contact our admissions coordinator for current tuition rates, payment plans, and guidance on securing funding through insurance, scholarships, or state assistance programs.
